Description
The Department of Veterinary Clinical Sciences, College of Veterinary Medicine at Iowa State University is seeking qualified applicants for a 12-month, full-time, tenured or tenure-track, or clinical term-track position in small animal internal medicine (SAIM). Applications are being accepted at the levels of Assistant, Associate, or Full Professor. Primary responsibilities include clinical service, teaching, and scholarly activity. Approximate effort allocation will vary by track and rank but generally includes:

At the rank of Tenured or Tenure-track Assistant, Associate, or Full Professor, the position will consist of 50-60% on clinics/hospital service, 25-40% collaborative or independent research, 5-10% teaching professional DVM and graduate student courses, and 5% institutional service.

At the rank of Clinical Term Assistant, Associate, or Full Professor, the position will consist of 70-75% on clinics/hospital service, 10-15% collaborative or independent research, 5% teaching professional DVM and graduate student courses, and 5% institutional service.

Actual percentages are flexible depending on the candidate’s expertise and departmental needs.
The successful candidate will be committed to providing excellent patient care and will share a keen dedication for student education and resident training. They will be joining a service that includes four board-certified internists, three technicians, a client services coordinator, and an active and successful SAIM residency training program. We have a full range of flexible and rigid endoscopic equipment for diagnostic as well as interventional endoscopic procedures. Our service is further supported by the hospital’s diverse specialty services, including a fully staffed soft tissue and orthopedic surgery service, a fully equipped ophthalmology service, a cardiology service with an active interventional caseload, as well as a medical and radiation oncology service providing one of the only stereotactic radiation therapy (SRT) services in the Midwest. Our diagnostic imaging capabilities are enhanced by 2 ultrasound units, a 32-slice CT scanner, and a 1.5T MRI unit. Exceptional care of our inpatients is provided by a level-2 VetCOT emergency and trauma center that is staffed by 4 ACVECC diplomates and provides advanced 24-hour care for our inpatients and community pets. Lastly, the College of Veterinary Medicine and Iowa State University have recently invested significant resources and staff to create an in-house core laboratory for bench-top and clinical research.
The Small Animal Hospital, part of the Dr. W. Eugene and Linda Lloyd Veterinary Medical Center, is a newly constructed and renovated building providing a state-of-the-art teaching, learning, and working facility. The successful candidate should also be collegial and highly collaborative with a clinical focus that will enhance and complement the clinical activities in the Lloyd Veterinary Medical Center. Required Minimum Qualifications:

DVM/VMD or equivalent degree

Diplomate status or completion of an approved small animal internal medicine residency program with credentials accepted by the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine (ACVIM) or the European College of Veterinary Internal Medicine (ECVIM) to participate in the board certification examination process

A valid State of Iowa veterinary license must be obtained by the start date
In addition, positions at the following ranks will also require:
ASSOCIATE OR FULL PROFESSOR:

Experience in internal medicine as an ACVIM – small animal internal medicine (SAIM) or ECVIM-companion animal (CA) board-certified internist commensurate with rank

Documented record of productive scholarship (e.g., grant funding, peer-reviewed publications)
-
A record of successful clinical and didactic teaching and resident training
CLINICAL TERM ASSOCIATE OR FULL PROFESSOR:
-
Experience in internal medicine as an ACVIM (SAIM) or ECVIM-CA board-certified internist
Preferred Qualifications:
-
Board Certification by the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine (SAIM)
-
An advanced degree (MS, PhD)
-
Unique expertise in an internal medicine sub-specialty (hematology, nephrology, infectious diseases, etc.)

Experience in didactic and clinical teaching
-
Experience working in a large multi-specialty hospital

Experience mentoring house officers
-
A record of scholarship as demonstrated through manuscript publication/preparation, national presentations, or evidence of having applied for, received, or completed grants/funding
