The Allegheny General Hospital (AGH) Emergency Medicine Residency Program, part of the Allegheny Health Network, is seeking an Associate/Assistant Program Director (APD) to join our dynamic residency leadership team.
For more than 40 years, AGH EM has trained generations of emergency physicians known for clinical excellence, professionalism, and service to their communities. We are now entering a new chapter, one focused on modernizing our educational design, fostering wellness and teamwork, and preparing residents to lead in a rapidly changing healthcare landscape.
The ideal candidate is an engaged, collaborative educator who models integrity, curiosity, and a growth mindset. Applicants should demonstrate enthusiasm for resident development, a commitment to educational innovation, and a track record of effective mentorship and teamwork.
As part of our leadership team, the APD will play a vital role in evolving our curriculum, strengthening bedside teaching and feedback, and helping shape the culture of the residency. The successful candidate will partner closely with incoming Program Director, Dr. Robert Sobehart, MD to advance a mission centered on excellence, innovation, teamwork, and service.
AGH is a Level 1 Trauma Center and the basis for the Emmy Award winning TV show "The Pitt." The program has 36 residents who complete rotations at multiple sites within AHN's ten hospitals. The AGH residents also do innovative training at AHN's nationally acclaimed STAR Simulation Center.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Doctor of Medicine (MD), Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO), or equivalent
- Board certification or board eligibility in Emergency Medicine (ABEM or AOBEM)
- Eligible for or currently licensed to practice medicine in Pennsylvania
- Demonstrated participation in graduate medical education or resident mentorship
Preferred Qualifications:
- Prior leadership experience in GME (Program Director, Associate/Assistant Program Director, Clerkship Director, or Committee Chair)
- Familiarity with ACGME accreditation standards, milestones, and curriculum development
- Effective communication, organization, and leadership skills
- Dedication to teamwork, professionalism, and fostering a positive learning environment
- Interest in educational innovation, simulation, ultrasound, or data-driven curriculum design
- Commitment to resident wellness, inclusion, and growth
Key Responsibilities:
- Provide collaborative leadership and oversight of residency operations in partnership with the Program Director and core faculty
- Lead educational and professional development initiatives aligned with program and institutional goals
- Develop and continuously refine curricular and assessment strategies
- Participate actively in resident recruitment, selection, evaluation, and mentoring
- Serve on the Clinical Competency Committee (CCC) and Program Evaluation Committee (PEC)
- Promote scholarship and professional growth among residents and faculty
- Support a culture of teamwork, belonging, and psychological safety
- Maintain visibility at conferences, in the ED, and across hospital committees to strengthen integration between education and operations
