- Associate Counsel
Description
The Associate Counsel will support UnityPoint Health’s strategy and business services groups. Initially, the role will focus on drafting, reviewing and revising general business contracts, including supply chain, equipment, consulting, and software agreements, as well as contracts supporting strategically important service lines such as cardiology, oncology, and other system-priority areas. Over time, the Associate Counsel is expected to take on increasing responsibility for significant business transactions, strategic initiatives, and governance matters, and to become familiar with regulatory issues that affect the health care industry.
We are seeking a collaborative team member who is eager to learn, interested in developing expertise in health care law and regulation, and enthusiastic about growing into a broader transactional and governance-focused role within the organization.
Hours: Monday-Friday, standard business hours
Location: Onsite and remote opportunities available - applicants preferably reside in the Des Moines, IA area and can work onsite at our corporate office in West Des Moines. Remote applicants must reside within the UPH footprint of Iowa, Illinois, or Wisconsin - travel to Des Moines will be required.
Legal Advice & Counsel:
- Under the general supervision of the Deputy General Counsel, serves as a legal advisor to the business on a wide range of issues impacting the Strategy and Business Services Practice Group.
- Recommends resolutions for legal and regulatory issues, leveraging knowledge of applicable laws, regulations, UPH goals, policies, and operations.
- Advises on, negotiates, drafts, and reviews various legal documents for the business, with guidance from the Deputy General Counsel, Assistant General Counsel, and/or Chief Legal Officer.
- Identifies and implements best practices to mitigate risk.
- Conducts legal research, identifies and analyzes legal issues, presents clear recommendations, and ensures legal compliance for appropriate stakeholders.
- Influences, directs, and builds relationships with the legal team, business leaders, key stakeholders, and external partners through effective communication.
- Pursues professional development and stays informed about current trends and changes that impact legal recommendations.
Requirements
Education/Licenses:
- Juris Doctor degree from a fully accredited American Bar Association law school
- State Bar and MPRE
Experience:
- Minimum of 3 years practicing law required
- Experience drafting and negotiating contracts required
- Familiarity with common issues in software agreements required
- Experience with business transactions preferred
- Prior health law experience is not required but highly preferred
Knowledge/Skills:
- Methods and techniques of case management, prioritization, and control
- Plan, organize, integrate and manage legal activities
- Proficient with technology, including Microsoft products
- Ability to communicate effectively with all levels of team members, leaders, and board members
- Excellent written and communication skills
- Ability to advise on risk and provide advice to senior business leaders
- Problem-solving skills and ability to make decisions daily relative to appropriate and applicable projects and matters, including negotiating contracts and mediating disputes
- Ability to coordinate work processes and projects with attorneys and market leadership to ensure projects are completed timely
- Ability to operate in ambiguity and make sound legal recommendations
