Dartmouth Health is seeking an experienced attorney to serve as an Associate General Counsel for the system in the area of Research. This is an exciting opportunity for a research-focused lawyer who has previously thrived in academia or within the academic healthcare environment.
About the job:
Reporting to the Deputy General Counsel of Dartmouth Health with a secondary relationship to the Vice President of Research Operations, the role oversees the legal aspects of research administration, research contracting including sponsored awards, clinical trials, and regulatory research matters, at a world-class academic health system. The Associate General Counsel for Research is vital to protecting the institutional interests of Dartmouth Health while enabling a high performing, compliant and mission-driven research environment. This candidate will be a seasoned research attorney who understands the complexity of federally funded research and academic governance within an integrated health system.
The successful candidate will possess:
- Passion for advancing academic and clinical research missions
- Strong sponsored awards review experience, and proficiency in application of applicable laws and regulations, especially pertaining to federal grant terms and conditions
- Experience in drafting, reviewing and negotiating clinical trial agreements
- Prior legal work in an academic and/or academic healthcare environment
- Ability to monitor grant and research policies and practices at other institutions to utilize new ideas and technologies
- Collaborative and customer service orientation, able to work collegially with a wide range of stakeholders
This is a fully remote role with the expectation that all Office of General Counsel team members will come onsite to Lebanon, NH twice per year.

Minimum qualifications:
Qualified candidates must hold a Juris Doctor (JD) degree from an accredited law school and have prior legal experience in an academic or academic medical center environment. Active licensure with a State Bar, as well as the ability to obtain licensure in the New Hampshire Stare Bar within one year of hire. A minimum of 6 years of experience is required along with strong legal writing and communication skills.
