JOB PURPOSE
The major focus for the Intern Interbody R&D will be to support either implant or instrument designs for a next generation cervical, interbody, or fixation system within the spinal implants product development group. You will focus on instrument design, modeling, and drawing creation as well as participate in weekly core team meetings and surgeon calls or on-site meetings. Additionally, you will support bench top testing and cadaver lab(s) to evaluate designs and test instruments and implants in simulated surgical settings.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES
The following are the essential functions of this position. This position may be responsible for performing additional duties and tasks as needed and assigned.
- Work within a project team to contribute original concepts for new product development
- Provide weekly progress status updates to the project lead
- Generating engineering models and prints based on marketing inputs
- Collaborating with the machine shop and outside suppliers to generate prototypes
- Completing verification testing to prove out design outputs
- Completing validation testing in a cadaveric lab to confirm user requirements
- Generating test protocols and reports to document test methods and results
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
The requirements listed below are representative of the education, knowledge, skill and/or ability required for this position.
Education/Certifications:
- HS Diploma or equivalent required
- Enrollment in Bachelor's or Master's degree program
- Junior or Senior level standing, or graduate student
- 3.0 GPA
Experience, Skills, Knowledge and/or Abilities:
- A basic understanding of CAD (SolidWorks, Creo, or NX)
- Basic proficiency in MS Office (Word and Excel)
- Engineering discipline of study in Mechanical, Biomechanical, or Bioengineering
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
The education, knowledge, skills and/or abilities listed below are preferred qualifications in addition to the minimum qualifications stated above.
Education/Certifications:
- Biomedical or Mechanical Engineering Major from an ABET accredited program
Additional Experience, Skills, Knowledge and/or Abilities:
- CAD modeling experience with Creo

The anticipated base hourly rate for an employee who is located in California for this position is $22 - $26 per hour. The final pay offered to a successful candidate will be dependent on several factors that may include but are not limited to the type and years of experience within the job, the type and years of experience within the industry, education, etc. The Company is a multi-state employer and this pay scale may not reflect the pay scale for an employee who works in other states or locations.
