Description
The Indiana University (IU) Simon Comprehensive Cancer Center (IUSCCC) is 1 of only 57 National Cancer Institute (NCI)-designated Comprehensive Cancer Centers in the United States. The IUSCCC puts significant resources into developing research programs, faculty, and facilities that will lead to better approaches to prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of cancer.Job Summary
The Tobacco Treatment Specialist (TTS) will work with adult patients and family members identified through IU Simon Comprehensive Cancer Center's Office of Community Outreach and Engagement (COE) events in the community, as well as through lung cancer screening programs for those who are in need of tobacco treatment. This will be a shared position between the COE and End Lung Cancer Now and will work closely with the IU Health Centralized Tobacco Treatment Program (IUH CTTP).
Department-Specific Responsibilities
- Assist the IUH CTTP as capacity allows and document all patient encounters in IU Health's electronic health record.
- Assist clients to transition into intake, assess needs of program participants, and provide counseling and other services as appropriate.
- Assist program participants in developing and implementing effective strategies to quit smoking and other tobacco use. Create and sustain a supportive participant-focused environment for the change of addictive behavior.
- Gather and record detailed and accurate information in regard to program participants and outcomes and maintain thorough and confidential records of counseling sessions in the patient's confidential electronic health record.
- Answer incoming calls to the program and follow established procedures and protocols.
- Manage referrals and communications with clinicians. Engage participating individuals both telephonically and face-to-face and provide tobacco use assessment and treatment interventions in accordance with evidence-based practices. Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams in the provision of direct patient counseling services as appropriate.
- Develop motivational interviewing techniques to move participating individuals through the stages of change and utilize evidence-based techniques to provide tobacco treatment to participating individuals. Participate in interdisciplinary treatment planning, ongoing evaluation and follow-up.
- Educate and engage staff, patients, volunteers and outside organizations on the Tobacco Treatment Program. Pursue continued professional education to enhance skills and keep abreast of current issues, practices and certifications pertinent to tobacco treatment.
- Design, plan, promote, deliver, and evaluate training events to train multiple provider types about all aspects of evidence-based tobacco treatment techniques.
- May provide daily guidance and functional supervision to students, interns, and volunteers in health promotion disciplines as appropriate and as requested in the future.
Qualifications
EDUCATION
Required
- Bachelor's degree in nursing, addictions, health promotion, health education or other health-related field
Required
- 1 year of tobacco cessation counseling experience, mental health or addictions counseling, health coaching, wellness coaching or other applicable experience
Required
- Possesses a thorough grasp of all aspects of comprehensive, evidence-based tobacco treatment including the psychology of addictive behavior, physiological aspects of withdrawal, and behavior modification techniques that facilitate the tobacco recovery process
- Demonstrates understanding of addiction and behavioral theories and approaches
Working Conditions / Demands
The person in this role must be able to perform the essential functions with or without accommodation.
Position will require occasional statewide travel.
Additional Information
Trainings may include providing continuing education credits and will require working with the university's continuing education department.
