JOB SUMMARY
Under direct supervision prepare laboratory specimens for storage or shipment following investigator study protocol in the Clinical Research Unit Laboratory . Process body fluids, tissue and other substances for storage or shipment to various laboratories. P erforms a variety of moderately complex and generally standardized physical, chemical, or biological tests with procedures and techniques previously outlined by established protocols and other scientific data. Provides direction and guidance to lab staff.
EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE
Bachelor's degree in Biology, Chemistry, Zoology, or other related science, or high school diploma with four years of related clinical/research experience.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
1. Plan work schedule according to order of priority.
2. Process specimens following investigator study protocols.
3. Document any corrective action required.
4. Perform equipment maintenance and other quality assurance procedures; maintain related records.
5. Maintain sufficient inventory of supplies to meet anticipated requirements in the laboratory.
6. Enter information into WISER BSM for specimen tracking and/or other applicable tracking software based on research protocols/investigator's requirements/
7. Conducts generally standardized chemical, physical, and biological tests on experimental/clinical materials.
8. Sets up equipment and organizes materials used in performing scheduled tests, experiments, and/or operations.
9. Receive, inventory, and evaluate incoming specimens and related data to ascertain that they meet laboratory quality.
10. Prepare reagents as needed.
11. Rotate between tasks if needed to provide coverage during holidays, vacations, or absence of staff.
12. Reviews scientific journals, abstracts, and other publications for information applicable to research projects.
13. Performs other related duties incidental to the work described herein.
SKILLS/QUALIFICATIONS
Knowledge of the maintenance of routine records and reports; and of elementary laboratory techniques and safety precautions.
Ability is required to perform basic laboratory tasks; to keep specimens properly marked; to maintain adequate written laboratory records; and to utilize a computer.
Ability to listen and communicate effectively
Knowledge of medical terminology to interact with medical staff regarding laboratory procedures and results
Knowledge of medical equipment and instruments
Knowledge of common safety hazards and universal precautions to establish a safe work environment
WORK ENVIRONMENT
Research laboratory environment
Frequent exposure to diseases, medicinal preparations and other conditions common in a lab environment
Must wear protective equipment (gloves, gowns/lab coats, eye protection, face protection)
Exposure to glass and other breakable objects
Exposure to animals
