Incredible Opportunity for a Full-Time Veterinary Laboratory Technician to Join the Team at Pet Specialists of Austin!Compensation negotiable based on credentials and experience with a hourly pay rate starting at $18 - $22/ hour. The actual rate offered will carefully consider a wide range of factors, including your skills, qualifications, experience, and location.
Pet Specialists of Austin is a 24-hour multi-specialty hospital in the heart of Austin. Our expert team includes board-certified doctors, experienced veterinarians, skilled nursing staff, and a compassionate front office, all dedicated to providing exceptional care in Emergency, Critical Care, Internal Medicine, Surgery, Oncology, and Neurology.
The Lab/Pharmacy Technician is responsible for performing consistently and with accuracy all in-house lab work for patients, as well as being responsible for sending and receiving outside diagnostics. The Lab/Pharmacy Technician is responsible for preparing all new prescription medications for in-house patients, out-patients, and refilling all medications for patients upon request, including calling in and faxing prescription requests.
Responsibilities of this role include:
- Be primarily responsible for all shipping of lab samples and medications to outside laboratories.
- Maintain and care for all in-hospital laboratory equipment, including running controls.
- Be primarily responsible for distribution and follow-up of all incoming lab work from outside labs.
- Attach all in-house and outside diagnostics to the associated clinical record, and maintain EzyVet’s worklist.
- Stock and maintain adequate inventory for all lab supplies and products, as well as prescription medication to be dispensed to patients.
- Once provided the requisition sheet or order and blood/tissue/fluid sample, run requested in-house lab work accurately.
- Prepare medications and prescriptions for dispensing as directed by the doctor.
- When provided order from doctor, call outside pharmacies for filling of prescriptions for patients.
- Daily, upon receipt of sample and lab order form, package and ship to appropriate outside laboratory.
- Run controls and maintenance on each piece of in-house lab equipment, including updates on equipment as indicated. Inform supervisor of any abnormalities with running or servicing of equipment.
- Maintain an internal spreadsheet of all lab work that is sent to outside labs, with expectation of receipt. Verify receipt and ensure proper notification to primary doctor.
- Work with Inventory Manager to set up and maintain appropriate order points for all items used in the Pharmacy and Lab areas. Keep areas well stocked and be proactive in requesting inventory purchases based on needs.
Qualifications:
- Minimum 1 year of veterinary medical experience is preferred.
- Experience working in a veterinary clinic as a technician or assistant is required.
- Proficiency in basic animal restraint and exam room skills is required.
- Strong attention to detail and accuracy in handling lab samples and prescriptions.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced, team-oriented environment.
- Familiarity with veterinary lab equipment and software such as EzyVet is a plus.
