Description

Rubius Therapeutics is a clinical-stage biopharmaceutical company developing a new class of medicines called Red Cell Therapeutics™. Our proprietary RED PLATFORM® was designed to genetically engineer and culture Red Cell Therapeutics™ that are selective, potent and off-the-shelf allogeneic cellular therapies for the potential treatment of several diseases across multiple therapeutic areas. Our therapies can potentially be used to kill tumors in cancer and to regulate the immune system for the treatment of autoimmune diseases. We are currently enrolling patients in a Phase 1/2 clinical trial of RTX-240 in patients with relapsed/refractory or locally advanced solid tumors. In addition, RTX-240 is being evaluated in a second Phase 1 arm of the clinical trial for the treatment of patients with relapsed/refractory acute myeloid leukemia, and our IND has been cleared by the U.S. FDA for RTX-321 for the treatment of human papillomavirus 16-positive cancers.

We are proud of our passionate, high-performance culture – one based on a set of values that are the cornerstone of who we are and how we hold ourselves accountable. Founded in 2013, we are headquartered in Cambridge, MA, and our manufacturing facility in Smithfield, RI was named 2020 Top 5 Best Places to Work in Rhode Island among medium-sized companies by Providence Business News. We are currently expanding across all functions within the organization. Red blood cells are no longer just for carrying oxygen. Summary

We are looking for a cell culture process development expert to join the Upstream Process Development team and be a key scientific leader driving the next generation version of our RCT™ cell therapy. They will manage directly a team of scientists and engineers to optimize the novel red cell therapy for both the cell culture medium design and the upstream process engineering requirements. The ideal candidate will have direct, hands-on industrial upstream experience (ideally in gene and/or cell therapy process development), along with a strong understanding of cell culture medium development in a broad nutritional space.  The position is an influential role and thus this candidate must be a strong technical leader. The job also requires this leader to represent the team as a high quality liaison with partner groups including Downstream Process Development, Analytical Development, and other technical partners to facilitate rapid process development cycles.

Responsibilities
  • Design and develop high quality cell culture media development considering the requirements of upstream process development to create an ex vivo genetically modified cell
  • Leverage high throughput experimental designs and equipment (from deep well plates to ambr15 or ambr250 bioreactors) to optimize cellular differentiation and optimize for product quality
  • Direct oversight of cell culture medium optimization and process development projects and people management responsibilities while maintaining an active presence in the lab supporting the team
  • Ability to manage various priorities in a fast-paced and growing environment
  • Document, share, present and communicate study results at meetings and in other formats

Requirements

  • Strong industrial upstream processing knowledge required from a small scale cell culture process development perspective
  • Industrial experience with biologics, gene and/or cell therapy upstream process development including ownership of key process decisions.  Prior experience with different modes of cultivation such as fed batch and perfusion (ATF, TFF, G-rex) desired
  • Prior experience with primary cells, T or NK cell culture, stem cells (including hematopoietic stem cells), stem cell differentiation, and/or erythropoiesis desired
  • Ph.D. and 5+ years or MS and 12+ years of experience in bioengineering, chemical engineering, biology, biochemistry or related field.
  • Direct prior industrial experience managing at least 2+ direct reports required; experience with 4+ direct reports desired
