The Department of Surgery at Washington University School of Medicine invites applications and nominations for the Chief, Division of Pediatric Surgery.

Reporting to the Chair of the Department of Surgery, the Chief will be renowned for clinical excellence and have demonstrated a commitment to medical education and promoting scholarship/research opportunities for students, residents, fellows and faculty. The Chief will be charged with leading the continued growth and development of the division’s educational excellence, outstanding clinical programs and will support the division’s ground-breaking basic, clinical, and translational research.

The Chief oversees all administrative and financial functions supporting clinical operations, research administration and educational programs. The Chief also serves as Surgeon-in-Chief for St. Louis Children’s Hospital (SLCH) working collaboratively with hospital administration, the pediatric surgical chiefs and Department Chairs to enhance the clinical and academic excellence of pediatric surgical programs at SLCH.

The pediatric surgery division includes six faculty providing comprehensive treatment for a spectrum of pediatric congenital conditions, burns and trauma. The division is a regional center for open fetal surgery. Faculty have expertise in treating congenital conditions – offering prenatal counseling as well as surgical and follow-up care. They also work closely with cancer specialists at the Alvin J. Siteman Cancer Center, an NCI-designated and internationally recognized cancer center, in providing surgical treatment of many types of tumors.

In FY 2022, the division faculty performed 3,340 hospital procedures, 299 office procedures and saw over 11,000 ambulatory visits. Care is provided predominately at St. Louis Children’s Hospital (SLCH) and two outpatient facilities. St. Louis Children’s Hospital is consistently ranked among the top children’s hospitals in the nation. There are 402 licensed beds, including a 56-bed pediatric intensive care unit, a 38- bed heart center, and a 122-bed newborn intensive care unit. St. Louis Children’s Hospital is the only pediatric hospital in Missouri and Illinois nationally recognized by the American College of Surgeons as a Level 1 Pediatric Trauma Center.

The pediatric surgery division offers an ACGME approved pediatric surgery fellowship program with two fellows, who serve overlapping two-year fellowships. Faculty are actively involved in many areas of research with over $295,000 in research funding and 51 clinical research studies ongoing.

The successful candidate will be a visionary and strategic leader in in the field of pediatric surgery with experience in an academic medical center having served in a leadership position with significant budgeting responsibility and be at the Associate Professor or Professor rank with demonstrated experience fostering a professional environment supporting diversity, equity, and inclusion. Certification in pediatric surgery by the American Board of Surgery and holding, or qualified to obtain, an unrestricted license to practice medicine in Missouri are required.
