Additional Information about Program
Kin Veterinary Specialty and Emergency Center
Greenwood Village (south Denver metro), Colorado
(see www.kin.vet)
The greater Denver area offers rich cultural, social, and sporting opportunities, while the nearby Rocky Mountains provide year-round outdoor recreation.
Kin opened in November 2026 as an independent emergency and specialty hospital serving the south Denver community. Owned and managed by the doctors and team members who care for our patients, Kin delivers world-class veterinary medicine—Emergency/Critical Care, Extracorporeal Therapy, Nephrology/Urology, Internal Medicine, Oncology, Cardiology, Surgery, and Neurology—while restoring ownership, integrity, and joy to the professionals who treat every patient like family.
Our new 40,000-square-foot facility includes 12 exam rooms, a 64-slice CT scanner, 1.5-Tesla MRI, C-arm, four surgical suites, digital radiography, ultrasound, echocardiography, and endoscopy suites. Dedicated spaces include an intensive care unit, and extracorporeal and ventilation suite, complete in-house reference laboratory, large conference room with breakout rooms.
Critical Care Internship
A critical care intern works alongside ACVECC diplomates for approximately 75% of clinical time, managing urgent and emergent referrals, hospitalized patients, follow-up visits, and immersion in extracorporeal therapy (ECT). Up to 25% of clinical time is spent on walk-in emergencies during day, swing, and infrequent overnight shifts. Scheduled overnight shifts are not a routine part of the rotation; however, periodic mechanical-ventilation cases may require overnight coverage that replaces a daytime shift.
Research opportunities are available, though not required given the 6 month duration of the program. The internship is designed to prepare interns for successful application to an accredited small-animal emergency and critical care residency.
Education & Mentorship
In addition to daily hospital rounds, dedicated intern teaching rounds occur one hour each week and include varied topical sessions. ECC Specialty Rounds focus on intern learning and encompass topic rounds, journal club, and physiology rounds. Didactic lectures by senior staff are delivered and recorded. Interns actively participate in and present at Journal Club, Grand Rounds, and Morbidity & Mortality rounds, and each intern delivers one formal clinical case presentation to the staff. Every intern is paired with a mentor.
Requirements & Expectations
A Colorado veterinary license (NAVLE qualifies) is required. A video interview is required and an in-person visit is strongly recommended. Ideal candidates are highly motivated, thrive in a busy, high-acuity environment, and welcome both professional and personal challenge. They must be enthusiastic, committed learners who practice high-quality medicine and surgery.
Our goal is to propel you into a critical care residency; we will equally support your development toward another complementary specialty or a successful career as an emergency clinician.
Requirements
DVM or equivalent degree; rotating internship or 3 years clinical experience preferred but new graduates are strongly considered
