Veterinary Surgical Center of Long Island (“VSCLI”) is seeking an Emergency Veterinarian to join our Team.
VSCLI is a PRIVATELY-OWNED Specialty Referral Practice and a 24-Hour Emergency Care Hospital in Huntington, NY. Our brand-new 15,000 square-foot state-of-the-art hospital opened its doors in May 2024. VSCLI’s specialty services include: Emergency, Diagnostics, and Surgery. VSCLI is seeking an experienced Emergency Veterinarian to join our Team, and assist us in rapidly growing our specialty referral practice and 24-hour emergency hospital.
VSCLI is looking for a highly skilled Emergency Veterinarian who is dedicated to delivering the highest quality of emergency medicine and critical care. We are seeking an Emergency Veterinarian who specializes in triage and treating life-threatening injuries and illnesses.
We are seeking an ER veterinarian who can cover four weekly shifts (Sunday to Wednesday). Your schedule will rotate monthly from 8am to 8pm and 8pm to 8am (48 hours weekly).
For Emergency Veterinarians with surgical interests, your tenure at VSCLI will enable you to scrub in and receive surgical training by VSCLI's specialty surgeons. Your training will include orthopedics, soft tissue, surgical oncology, neurosurgery, and endoscopy. Once you have the required proficiency, you will be able to bring emergency cases requiring surgery into the OR.

This is an outstanding opportunity for an experienced Emergency Veterinarian who VSCLI can trust and promote to our referring veterinarians (who send their patients to us for specialty surgery).
We are seeking an Emergency Veterinarian to provide emergency and critical care to our patients and someone who thrives in a fast-paced emergency clinic and can remain calm under pressure. This individual must also be able to adapt quickly to our patients’ changing conditions, be a quick thinker and be able to treat emergent cases quickly. You must be able to work in consultation with our other ER doctors and Surgical Specialists. Experience treating the following conditions is required:
- Wound Care
- Gastrointestinal issues
- Trauma (such as falling from high places, being struck by a car or external object, etc.)
- Seizures
- Diabetic Ketoacidosis
- Respiratory Distress
- Pain and discomfort
- Post-operative complications
- Disorientation
- Trouble breathing
- Blood in their urine or stool
- Constipation
Key responsibilities include:
- Comprehensive patient exams and medical work-ups
- Client communication and education
- Performing emergency surgeries and procedures as needed, including foreign bodies, pyometra, GDV correction, splenectomies.
- Utilize advanced diagnostic tools, including radiology, ultrasound, in-house laboratory testing, and blood transfusion protocols.
- Effectively communicating with pet owners (clients), providing professional and compassionate care to both pets and their families.
- Collaborating with the veterinary team to develop and implement individualized treatment plans with the goal of ensuring an optimal patient outcome.
- Provide guidance on follow-up care and collaborate with primary care veterinarians.
- Maintaining accurate medical records (PMS is Instinct), staying in compliance with hospital policy and industry regulations, and staying informed about the latest advances in emergency medicine.
- Pharmacy duties such as prescribing medications to patients and following controlled substance protocols
- Promote teamwork and staff efficiency
- Adhere to hospital safety protocols, including infection control and handling of hazardous materials.
- Provide high-quality emergency and critical care to patients in need of urgent medical attention.
- Participate in practice management updates and training at all levels
- Performs other duties as assigned by Management.
- Diagnose and treat a variety of conditions, including trauma, toxicities, respiratory distress, shock, and other life-threatening situations.
- Leading your ER/ICU team.
Proficiency with Ultrasound, Digital Radiology, CT Scanner, MRI, In-House Laboratory is preferred, as well as being well-versed in pathology, pharmacology, and animal anatomy.

Qualifications (Required)
- Veterinarian degree (DVM) from an accredited college or university
- Current NYS Veterinary License
- DEA registration must be obtained and maintained
- 3+ years of experience in a veterinary emergency practice
- Strong diagnostic and clinical skills.
- Excellent surgical skills.
- Ability to work well in a team-oriented environment.
- Exceptional interpersonal and communication skills with co-workers and clients.
- Commitment to providing compassionate and high-quality veterinary care.
- Excellent Communication Skills and the ability to communicate effectively, efficiently, and in a timely manner with all Hospital staff.
- Excellent Client communication skills are critical. Clients are trusting you for all of the information that they need to make decisions about their family member.
- Position does require the ability to lift up to 45 pounds.
- Display confidence and reassurance when dealing with pets experiencing severe stress, illness, or pain.
- Be able to kneel on the floor and crouch down to examine patients.
