Are you an experienced Intensive Care Specialist ready to lead one of Australia’s most unique and professionally rewarding regional ICU services?
Do you want to practice intensive care medicine at the edge of clinical complexity in a setting that regularly challenges and expands medical knowledge, clinical judgement, and teamwork?
Alice Springs Hospital is seeking an exceptional clinician and leader to take on the role of Head of Department, Intensive Care Unit.
This is a rare opportunity to shape and lead an iconic regional ICU service while living and working in the heart of Australia.
Alice Springs Hospital ICU has earned the respect and trust of Central Australians from urban, rural, and remote communities, as well as the many visitors and travellers passing through the region. The ICU is a pivotal service upon which much of the hospital depends.
We are a 10-bed unit with:
- More than 600 emergency admissions annually
- Approximately 50 paediatric admissions per year
- Comprehensive data reporting through COMET and ANZICS
- Low standardised mortality ratios
Our registrars come from ICU, Emergency Medicine, Anaesthetics, ACRRM, and General Medicine training pathways, creating a diverse and stimulating educational environment. Approval also exists for a Transitional Fellow position.
Alice Springs Hospital provides tertiary-level care across a catchment larger than NSW, Victoria, and the ACT combined, despite serving a town of fewer than 30,000 people.
Medical subspecialty services at ASH include:
- Cardiology
- Nephrology
- Respiratory Medicine
- Oncology
- Infectious Diseases
- Endocrinology
General Surgery and Orthopaedics manage most surgical presentations, with intermittent Interventional Radiology support. Maternity/Obstetrics and Gynaecology manage complex cases in conjunction with ICU. We work closely with tertiary centres in Adelaide and Darwin, with retrieval support coordinated through a dedicated Medical Retrieval and Consultation Centre.
Seventy percent of our patients are Aboriginal Australians, many speaking several languages in addition to, or instead of, English. Their deep connection to country, family, and community shapes the way healthcare is delivered and provides an extraordinarily rich and meaningful clinical environment.
The burden of chronic disease and comorbidity presents earlier and more severely than in many metropolitan ICUs. Rheumatic heart disease, renal failure, diabetes, and chronic lung disease frequently coexist with sepsis, trauma, and acute critical illness. It is complex, challenging, deeply rewarding medicine.
Alice Springs offers an exceptional lifestyle with:
- Nationally recognised arts and music festivals
- Outstanding camping and outdoor recreation
- Cycling, hiking, running, football, motorsport, and community sporting events
- Excellent schools and family amenities
- A welcoming and resilient community
You will work alongside colleagues who respect, support, and genuinely care for one another while delivering high-quality care more than 1,500 kilometres from the nearest metropolitan centre
