As a Thoracic Surgeon, you will join our collegial team in Seattle, Washington at the award winning Virginia Mason Medical Center, part of Virginia Mason Franciscan Health (VMFH). In our high-volume practice, we perform a broad range of complex procedures, including robotic lung resections, mediastinal resections, esophagectomies, foregut surgeries (e.g., paraesophageal/hiatal hernia repairs, Heller myotomy), thoracotomies, pneumonectomies, chest wall reconstructions, and diaphragm plications.
At VMFH, you’ll join one of the West Coast’s highest-volume thoracic surgery teams, renowned for advanced minimally invasive and robotic-assisted procedures with exceptional outcomes. Our cohesive group includes five seasoned thoracic surgeons at three locations, two are dedicated solely to VMFH in Seattle, three dedicated physician assistants, and residents from the Pacific Northwest’s longest-established general surgery program. We hold weekly multidisciplinary tumor board and morbidity and mortality conference. We are supported by exceptional interventional GI and pulmonary services. With cutting-edge imaging, state-of-the-art robotics, a skilled OR staff, and a collaborative culture that emphasizes education and research, we offer a dynamic environment for professional growth and innovation in patient care.
To be successful in this 1.0 FTE position, you will be a skilled, board-certified, and compassionate Thoracic Surgeon, possessing excellent surgical skills. You will also demonstrate a deep commitment to patient-centered care and the capacity to thrive within a collegial and supportive environment.
Position Details:
- Call: Shared call amongst three surgeons; Friday - Monday weekend call 1:3 and alternate call during the week every third day.
- Tumor Board: Thoracic surgery, radiology, radiation oncology, medical oncology, gastroenterology, and pathology experts comprise our center’s Thoracic Oncology Tumor Board. This group meets weekly to discuss individual cases, ensuring our patients receive the highest quality care.
- Team Based Approach: Our team focuses on providing appropriate, compassionate, and state-of-the art medical care for our patients. Our clinicians comprise a dedicated and collaborative team that support each other and work together to create a positive work environment.
- Learning Opportunities: We support opportunities for continuing medical education and professional growth.

- Provide ongoing management and follow-up care for patients
- Offer guidance and support to patients and families regarding educational resources and community services
- Collaborate with other healthcare providers to ensure a coordinated approach to care
- Stay current with research and best practices in Thoracic Surgery to provide evidence-based care
- Participate in community outreach and education initiatives
- Salary; $550,000.00 - $800,000.00 /year

Required:
- Doctor of Medicine (MD) or Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO) degree from an accredited institution
- BC or BE in Thoracic Surgery (American Board of Thoracic Surgery)
- Fellowship or advanced training in thoracic surgery preferred
- Ability to obtain a medical professional license in the State of Washington
- Ability to obtain a DEA with full prescriptive authority needed for specific practice
- BLS and ACLS
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
- Ability to work collaboratively in a team-oriented environment
- Commitment to providing high-quality, compassionate care
